Los Mirlos keep making history: Peru’s psychedelic Amazonian cumbia arrives at NPR Tiny Desk
After conquering Coachella and New York’s Lincoln Center, the legendary Peruvian band adds a new international milestone with the premiere of their Tiny Desk, a stage that has hosted Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, Adele, BTS, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber and Gloria Estefan, among others.
New York, September 17, 2026. Los Mirlos continue to write one of the most important chapters in the international rise of Peruvian music. The iconic psychedelic Amazonian cumbia band premieres its NPR Tiny Desk performance, the most respected and influential live session showcase in the world. Along with their music, they brought a clear message about the challenges facing the Peruvian Amazon in their song “Llanto en la Selva”:
“Amazonian cumbia is a party, but it is also the voice of the land. This is how the jungle roars when it cries for help… we dedicate this song to our Indigenous brothers and sisters who defend the lungs of the world, even with their own lives.”
The session was recorded on July 28, a deeply meaningful date that coincides with Peru’s Independence Day celebrations, turning the performance into a celebration of Peruvian Amazonian music, identity and culture for a global audience.
Los Mirlos’ arrival at NPR Tiny Desk was secured by Rockass Online Music, a New York–based music production company and agency that has supported the band’s international expansion, creating new opportunities and strategies to bring their legacy and Peruvian Amazonian cumbia to new audiences.
Beyond the music, the performance carried a strong message of identity and belonging. Throughout the session, the band paid tribute to the majesty of the Amazon, its cultures and traditions, and presented Amazonian cumbia not only as a celebration but as the voice of the land. Los Mirlos dedicated one of their songs to the Indigenous peoples who defend the Amazon and its biodiversity, while founder Jorge Rodríguez recalled the band’s origins in Moyobamba, in Peru’s San Martín region.
Tiny Desk marks a new chapter in a career of more than five decades carrying the sound of the Peruvian Amazon to different generations and stages around the world.
